UK Car Market Extends Recovery as August Sales Jump 13.7%
August marks the strongest performance since 2018, with a ninth consecutive month of growth and battery-electric registrations up 27.7%.

Britain's new-car market continued its recovery in August, with registrations increasing 13.7% compared with the same month last year.
A total of 94,236 new vehicles were registered during August, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported by Reuters. It marked the ninth consecutive month of growth for the UK market.
Electric vehicles played an important role. Registrations of battery-electric vehicles increased 27.7% year on year, while separate figures from New AutoMotive suggested EVs accounted for roughly 30% of new registrations during August.
August is normally a relatively quiet month for Britain's motor industry because many customers delay purchases until September, when new registration identifiers are introduced. That means September will provide a much more important test of underlying demand.
The figures also arrive as the government examines options surrounding Britain's transition toward zero-emission vehicles and the targets placed on manufacturers.
The challenge for policymakers is balancing environmental ambitions with consumer demand, affordability, charging infrastructure and the ability of manufacturers to manage the transition.
For now, however, the August figures provide encouraging evidence that the British new-car market continues to expand.
