US Envoys Eye Moscow and Kyiv as New Peace Push Takes Shape

A renewed American attempt to find a diplomatic pathway out of the Russia-Ukraine war is taking shape, with plans being considered for two US peace envoys to travel separately to Russia and Ukraine.

The proposed missions could take place this weekend, but Reuters reported on Friday that the arrangements had not yet been finalised, with security concerns still being addressed.

The development follows cautiously optimistic comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said on Thursday that he believed there was a possibility of reaching an agreement to end the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also said American negotiators are expected to engage with both countries.

Despite those signals, there is no peace agreement and no guarantee that the proposed missions will produce formal negotiations.

Fundamental disagreements remain over territory, Ukraine's future security, the conditions for a ceasefire and what guarantees would be necessary to prevent another outbreak of war. That makes the latest initiative significant but highly preliminary.

The diplomatic effort is also unfolding while the war itself continues. The World Health Organization said on Friday that one of its main warehouses containing humanitarian medical supplies in the Kyiv region was attacked overnight.

This illustrates the difficult environment confronting negotiators: diplomatic channels may be reopening, but military operations and humanitarian consequences continue.

For millions of Ukrainians and Russians affected by more than four years of war, even the possibility of sustained negotiations will be closely watched.

The key question now is whether Washington can turn exploratory diplomacy into a process acceptable to both Kyiv and Moscow.
