Britain's Solar Boom Accelerates as Installations Hit Record Pace

Britain's shift toward household renewable energy is accelerating, with nearly 172,000 solar installations fitted across the UK since the beginning of 2026, according to government figures.

Every UK nation has recorded growth, while almost 28,000 installations were completed in July alone. The government says July was the third-highest monthly installation figure on record.

The figures coincide with another significant policy change: plug-in solar panels became legal to buy and use across Great Britain from 27 August.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that plug-in systems could save households as much as £110 a year, with an 800-watt system potentially providing up to 20% of an average home's electricity consumption.

Traditional rooftop solar can offer larger savings. The government estimates some homeowners could save up to £480 annually, depending on circumstances.

Battery installations are also rising rapidly, with around 36,000 certified installations during the first half of 2026 — almost double the equivalent period last year.

The larger policy question is whether rapid deployment of small-scale generation can help Britain reduce its exposure to volatile international gas prices while lowering household electricity costs.
