Israeli police have arrested a man in his 20s following alleged vandalism at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Jaffa.

The incident comes amid increasing international attention surrounding harassment directed at Christians and Christian institutions in Israel and the occupied West Bank.

Recent monitoring has indicated that reported anti-Christian incidents in Jerusalem have risen sharply over recent years, as set out in our Sunday report on religious freedom in Jerusalem.

The latest Jaffa incident should nevertheless be treated carefully: police have made an arrest, and the suspect's motive has not yet been conclusively established publicly.

The development follows growing concerns surrounding predominantly Christian Taybeh in the West Bank, where residents have reported settler-related intimidation and property damage.

Pope Leo XIV has also appealed for an end to violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and renewed calls for protection of civilians.

Why it matters: Christianity's historic communities in Israel and the Palestinian territories are comparatively small. Continued intimidation, violence or attacks against churches could accelerate concerns about their long-term presence in the Holy Land.

At the same time, Israeli police action and Jewish organisations working to protect Christian clergy are important parts of the story and should prevent the issue from being portrayed as a conflict between Christians and Jewish people generally.
