Christians in Israel Report Rising Harassment as Interfaith Allies Respond

Christians in Israel are voicing increasing concern about harassment as regional conflict places additional pressure on the country's small Christian minority.

Christians account for less than 2% of Israel's population.

Associated Press reporting documents incidents including spitting directed towards visible Christian religious figures and harassment affecting clergy.

The situation should, however, be reported with important context.

Jewish activists and interfaith organisations are working alongside Christian communities to document incidents, accompany religious figures and report alleged harassment. There have also been efforts to improve law-enforcement responses.

The story therefore should not be framed as hostility between Judaism and Christianity as whole religions. It concerns particular incidents of intolerance, the insecurity experienced by a small minority and attempts by Israelis of different faiths to defend religious coexistence.

Christian communities have lived in the Holy Land for centuries and remain deeply connected to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Galilee and other locations central to Christian history. Their security and continued presence consequently carry international religious and cultural significance.

**Why it matters:** Religious freedom is measured not merely by whether worship is legally permitted but by whether minority communities can practise their faith without intimidation.
