Xi Plans Business Powerhouse for Washington as US-China Relations Enter Critical Phase

Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to bring a large delegation of Chinese corporate executives to Washington when he visits the United States for a summit on 24 September, according to two sources cited by Reuters.

The move is unusual. Xi rarely travels overseas accompanied by a sizeable corporate delegation, particularly following years in which many of China's largest private companies faced intense regulatory pressure at home.

Reuters could not establish which executives will ultimately join the delegation. The initiative nevertheless appears intended partly to demonstrate Beijing's willingness to strengthen commercial and investment relations with the United States.

The symbolism is significant. US-China relations have become increasingly shaped by disputes involving tariffs, semiconductors, electric vehicles, technology exports, rare-earth minerals, investment and national security.

Washington has imposed extensive restrictions on Chinese businesses and technology, while Beijing has sought relief from US tariffs and greater certainty for Chinese companies.

Officials are discussing several possible areas for progress ahead of the summit, including trade in goods considered non-sensitive, rare-earth export licences and potential tariff reductions.

Expectations for a dramatic breakthrough remain modest. But the presence of business leaders could give the summit an economic dimension beyond conventional diplomatic discussions.

The September meeting will therefore be watched for evidence of whether the world's two largest economies can move from managing confrontation toward rebuilding at least limited commercial cooperation.
