UK air-traffic chaos and 2,000 flight cancellations blamed on NATS software defect
NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe said a software defect caused the disruption; safety was not compromised, while Ryanair called for his resignation.

A software defect in the UK’s air-traffic control system caused widespread disruption and about 2,000 flight cancellations, according to National Air Traffic Services.
NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe said the failure had been identified and maintained that safety was not compromised. The disruption nevertheless left airlines and passengers facing widespread cancellations and delays.
Ryanair called for Rolfe’s resignation and renewed demands for an independent review. The airline’s intervention is an attributed position; responsibility for regulatory or personnel action lies with the relevant authorities and the NATS board.
Editorial note: The cancellation total is an industry estimate and may be revised as airlines reconcile their schedules. The cause and safety assessment are attributed to NATS.
