Pope Leo Prays for Himalayan Flood Victims as Disaster Strikes Sacred Pilgrimage Region

Pope Leo XIV has expressed sorrow over the catastrophic floods in Nepal and offered prayers for the dead, missing, bereaved families and emergency workers responding to the disaster.

In a telegram conveyed through Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope expressed spiritual closeness to those affected and entrusted the dead to God's mercy.

The intervention comes as the number of casualties continues to rise and rescuers search for around 1,400 missing people.

There is also an unusually important religious dimension to the catastrophe.

The Himalayan region affected by the flooding includes routes used by international pilgrims travelling toward Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, sites regarded as sacred within several religious traditions.

Foreigners and pilgrims are among those missing.
