Apple Builds China-Specific AI Model With Alibaba

Apple has developed its own artificial-intelligence model specifically for China with support from Alibaba, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the project.

The development represents a notable shift in Apple's AI strategy.

Rather than relying exclusively on external generative-AI models, Apple has trained a large language model designed specifically for Chinese users.

China represents an unusually complicated market for international AI companies because advanced generative-AI services operate within strict regulatory requirements. Apple consequently needs to deliver competitive AI capabilities while ensuring that services offered on Chinese iPhones comply with local regulations. Alibaba's involvement provides access to substantial domestic AI expertise.

The project is also strategically important because Apple faces intense competition from Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Huawei and other domestic manufacturers increasingly market artificial intelligence as a central smartphone feature. Apple therefore risks losing ground if its Chinese customers cannot access comparable capabilities.

Reuters previously reported that Apple Intelligence had been registered with China's cyberspace regulator and would incorporate capabilities associated with Chinese AI providers. The new proprietary model suggests Apple is seeking greater control over its long-term Chinese AI architecture.
