Trump reportedly rejects Saudi request for direct US strikes on Houthis

WASHINGTON/RIYADH — Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly asked US President Donald Trump twice to launch American strikes against Houthi forces as their Red Sea offensive accelerated, but Trump declined to open another direct US military front.

Axios reported the calls, citing two US officials, and Reuters carried the report on Friday. Reuters said it could not independently verify the account at the time, while neither the White House nor the Saudi embassy immediately responded to requests for comment. That qualification should remain attached to the story.

According to the account, Washington is prepared to increase support for Saudi Arabia through intelligence and targeting information but does not currently plan to conduct direct military strikes against the Houthis. Around 100 US military advisers were also reportedly assisting Saudi forces, though stopping short of active participation in attacks.

The reported decision reflects a difficult strategic calculation. The United States is already deeply involved in conflict with Iran and is concentrating substantial military resources around Hormuz. Opening another direct campaign in Yemen would risk further expanding a regional war that is already placing serious pressure on American forces, global shipping and energy markets.

For Saudi Arabia, however, the Houthi advance presents a direct security and economic threat. The seizure of positions around Bab el-Mandeb threatens Red Sea shipping at precisely the moment Riyadh has become more dependent on western export routes.
