Former Thai Lawmaker Arrested After Deadly Shooting at Government Office

Thai police have arrested a former lawmaker after a shooting inside a provincial government office in Nonthaburi, near Bangkok, killed a senior local official and injured another person.

The attack occurred at about 11 a.m. on Monday inside the offices of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization. Authorities identified the suspect as Chalong Riewraeng, a former lawmaker.

Thongchai Yenprasert, chief executive of the provincial administrative organisation, was seriously wounded after being shot in the face and neck and later died in hospital. His driver suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and was reported to be in stable condition. Police believe Thongchai was the intended target.

According to information reported by the Associated Press, Chalong admitted carrying out the shooting and told investigators that the confrontation followed a personal financial dispute. That account remains part of the police investigation and should not be treated as a judicial finding.

The shooting carries particular national significance because it happened in the same province only days after a devastating school attack involving a 14-year-old student. That earlier shooting killed several people and intensified debate in Thailand about civilian gun ownership, firearm controls and safety in schools and public institutions.

Thailand has experienced several high-profile mass shootings since 2020, including the 2022 massacre at a childcare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu and the 2020 military rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima. Although each incident has different circumstances and motives, repeated shootings have kept firearm regulation on the political agenda.

Monday's attack will likely raise new questions about security at government offices, particularly where officials may face political, commercial or personal disputes.

Investigators are now examining the firearm, the sequence of events inside the building and the suspect's account of the confrontation. Because the case has only just begun, any conclusions regarding motive or criminal responsibility beyond the arrest and police allegations would be premature.
