Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 51 as Rescue Teams Reach Remote Villages — Asia · world

The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province has risen to at least 51, disaster officials said on Sunday, as rescue teams reached remote inland villages cut off by landslides and collapsed roads.

Hundreds of people have been treated for injuries and thousands spent a second night outdoors, either because their homes were destroyed or because they feared further aftershocks. More than a dozen aftershocks above magnitude 5.0 have been recorded since the initial quake.

RESCUE OPERATIONS

National disaster management officials said heavy machinery had been flown in to clear debris in the worst-affected districts, where concrete buildings pancaked and older masonry homes collapsed entirely. Rescue crews are working with limited light and intermittent power.

Access remains the central problem. Several coastal roads were severed by landslides, and helicopters have been used to move casualties and supplies. Officials warned the confirmed toll is provisional and likely to rise as isolated communities are reached.

SHELTER AND HEALTH

Emergency shelters have been established at schools, government buildings and open ground. Aid agencies flagged clean water, sanitation and medical supplies as the immediate priorities, with concern about waterborne illness in crowded temporary sites.

Hospitals in the provincial capital reported treating crush injuries and fractures, with the most serious cases transferred by air.

TSUNAMI ALERT LIFTED

A tsunami warning issued immediately after the quake was lifted within hours after only minor sea-level changes were recorded. Seismologists said the rupture occurred at a shallow depth, which amplified ground shaking on land while limiting displacement of the seabed.

VERIFIED SNAPSHOT

Magnitude: 7.7. Confirmed deaths: 51. Region: East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Tsunami warning: issued and subsequently lifted. Figures are official and subject to revision.
